A quiet gaze across the warm landscapes of South America
Exhibition at John M. Parrott Art Gallery from MARCH 31 - MAY 7 2026
254 Pinnacle St. Belleville ON
In Onde o Sol Espera (Where the Sun Awaits), I reflect on a thirty-day journey by bus through Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Peru. In Portuguese, espera holds a double meaning: it can be read as both “awaits” and “hopes,” suggesting a quiet tension between stillness and possibility that runs through the work. The photographs resist the familiar tropes of travel photography in South America, images that often exoticize, objectify, or turn people into trophies of spectacle.
Instead, I turn my lens toward the overlooked and the still: traces of human life without intrusion, details that carry the identity of a place without reducing it to stereotype. Flags, soccer fields, and desert textures appear as quiet witnesses, suggesting presence without exposure.
This series is both an outward journey through landscapes and an inward one: a quiet resistance, and a reminder that beauty can be found without taking.
